DSK AILA Activity, DAKOP, KHULNA , BANGLADESH.

May 26, 2009 Cyclone AILA struck at the coastal belt of Bangladesh. AILA has left trail devastation in its wake in the south-western region of Bangladesh. Estimates put the number of deaths at 121, though there is the apprehension that the figures could be higher. At least 32 people killed in Satkhira, 25 in Noakhali, 20 in Khulna,13 in Bhola,9 in Barisal 7 in Patuakhali 6 in laximipur, 2 each in Bagerhat and coxes Bazar one in Magura according to reports from the affected area and by News paper information.

The people lost their houses, livestock's, poultry, timber and fruit trees, vegetables garden, crops, household assets etc. and now they are helpless and a comprehensive humanitarian assistance program operation is their crying need at this moment.

DSK started emergency medical support among the affected people at Dakop Khulna just after Aila had struck the area. Five members medical team provided health care support at village Kalibari & Gunarisashanghat under Sutarkhali Union, Vitadanga & Jaliadanga village under Kamarkhali Union and Kaminibasini village at Tildanga Union under the subdistrict of Dakop, Khulna. Bangladesh.

Under the food support of DanChurceAid (DCA) DSK is going to distribute food among five hundred severely affected families of DAKOP sub district on June 14, 2009.

Location of water treatment plant: Kalinagor Bazar under Kamarkhola Union and Kalabagi Malak Shaber Bari under Sutonkhali Union.

Source of Drinking water of community people: Thy used to collect contaminated water from their neighbor villages (Dacope, Kailashgong and Camnibasia). They are suffering from different type of diseases resulting from surface drinking water.

Benefit of the Water Treatment Plant:
 It is expected that the families living around the plant will be able to drink and use pure water for regular household need resulting in reducing water borne diseases.
 The beneficiaries are taking safe drinking water from desalination plants.
 Families using safe drinking water from these plants are reporting about the reduction of water born diseases in their families. (Data source from community remarks).
 Four community people have got job in these plants as machine operator-cum-caretaker.
 Community people will be able to save their time and money by collecting water from these plants.
