Water Point Implementation Strategy
Another innovative approach is community-managed tap water supply from DWASA / CWASA for the slum people of Dhaka and Chittagong Cities. Slum dwellers were traditionally not considered legitimate clients for water supply by WASA. Therefore, they were forced to collect their water from illegal points of the public distribution system or from other private sources. In this situation a group of people found a way to do a highly profitable illegal business in the slums through selling water in collaboration with WASA field staff.
In order to ensure water supply to the slum people under a legal framework, DSK began implementing several Water Points (WPs) with active participation of the slum community. This was sponsored by the donor. For overall management of water point a committee consisting of nine members (all women) and an advisory group comprising five male members was formed for each of the WPs. To date 120 WPs are in operation, with many more in the pipeline. DSK is also implementing sanitation and hygiene promotional activities in the urban slums.
