DSK-CARE Supported Host Community Project

With the technical support of CARE Bangladesh and financial support of the Office of U.S Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) branch of USAID, DSK implemented the 1st phase of the project entitled “ASHAR Alo (Action for Supporting the Host communities: Adaptation and Resilience)” aiming at providing WASH, shelter and DRR services to host community people of the area (Palongkhali union under Ukhiya upazila) adjacent to Ukhiya refugee camps in 2018. Now, DSK is implementing the 2nd phase (August 2019 to May 2021) of the project at Jaliyapalong Union under Ukhiya upazila. DSK emphasizes on WASH activities to be implemented for the estimated 17,500 individuals of 3,500 households under ward # 6, 7, 8 & 9 of Jaliyapalong focusing on: “Increase host communities’ access to safe water supply and sanitation with improved hygiene practices.”

DSK has a plan to construct new 35 DTWs and rehabilitate/repair 35 other existing TWs for ensuring water supply in the target communities following sphere standards. 15 WASH committees will be formed on geographical basis at the ratio of one per village, to ensure the sustainability of water facilities, with an intention that each committee will look after the maintenance and wellbeing of 5 tube wells. Each committee will be provided with maintenance tools and repair kits including spare parts following training.

450 durable household simple-pit latrines will be constructed to provide support of 2,250 individuals; priority will be given to households with single mothers, pregnant women, PWD, poorer households, and the elderly. Latrines will be constructed nearby the dwelling unit, with improved quality doors and interior locks for privacy, hand-washing facilities, and lighting for night-time use, serving to mitigate against GBV risks. Moreover, for differently-abled people, latrines will be widened, and equipped with a toilet seat and ramps.

The project intends to provide hygiene promotion training among 8 WASH volunteers and 15 Hygiene Promoters focussing on effective messaging for promoting safe water, proper operation and maintenance of latrines, hygienic food handling, and proper hand washing. 12,000 individuals will be reached through HH visits, community age and gender-segregated promotion sessions, and community-wide events.
